Filling of Cavities, Caries, and Decayed Teeth

Tooth decay, or damage and breakdown of the enamel and dentin of the teeth, is caused by bacteria in the mouth that form plaque and acids that eat away at the enamel of the teeth. This decay can cause cavities to form, which need fillings to treat. Fillings are often regarded as the most suitable and foolproof solution to restore decayed teeth.

What Are Cavities?

A cavity is a hole that forms on the hard surface of the tooth. Parents often notice these gaps in their children’s teeth. These small holes can cause discomfort and pain while eating or drinking hot liquids. They can also lead to toothaches that may require a dental exam.

If left untreated, cavities can lead to tooth loss. Thankfully, dentists can easily treat the problem and fill cavities with restorative fillings to prevent further decay.

How Does Tooth Decay Occur?

Tooth decay is a major health problem that affects children and adults in the United States. If left untreated, tooth decay can cause pain, problems with eating and performing simple daily activities, and can even cause tooth loss. Tooth decay can also lead to more serious problems elsewhere in the body, such as heart disease and diabetes.

Tooth decay occurs when bacteria in the plaque on teeth create an acidic environment in the mouth that eats away at the tooth enamel, eventually creating holes in the tooth called cavities. A cavity is treated by first removing the decayed portion of the tooth and then filling the area with a material, such as composite material or amalgam, to restore the structure and appearance of the damaged tooth.

If you experience any of the above symptoms, you should schedule an appointment with our dentist as soon as possible for a checkup and cleaning to prevent the development of cavities.

Treatment for Cavities and Tooth Decay

When a cavity or decay is detected, we will diagnose it and then determine what type of treatment is necessary. Tooth-colored fillings are the most common choice for treating cavities and tooth decay because they are made from a composite resin material that matches the color of your tooth enamel. They are strong and durable and are able to withstand everyday wear and tear for many years.

What Are Root Canals?

Root canals are a form of endodontic therapy used to save a tooth that is badly decayed or infected and cannot be treated with other methods. This treatment involves the removal of the tooth’s pulp tissue and the nerves within the tooth.

Once the diseased pulp is removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected to remove any bacteria. The inside of the tooth is then filled, and a dental crown is placed over the tooth to protect it from further damage and keep it looking and feeling natural.
