Before extracting your tooth, your oral surgeon will numb the area using local anesthesia. The tooth may need to be cut into sections to fully extract it. After the tooth is removed, you may need stitches.
When a tooth has been broken or damaged by decay and cannot be restored, your dentist may recommend tooth extraction. Tooth extraction is usually the last resort when decay or infection is so advanced that it cannot be treated with less invasive measures.
The most common reasons for tooth extraction are:
- Decay
- Crowding
- Dental trauma
- Infection
- Orthodontic treatment
- Periodontal disease
- Root canal infection
- Severe tooth pain
The best type of replacement for your missing tooth will depend on the condition of your gums, the amount of bone support in your jaw, and the position of the healthy teeth adjacent to the missing tooth.
It’s best to take impressions of your teeth after any orthodontic treatment has been completed (braces, Invisalign, etc.).
