Repair of Implant Supported Prosthesis

Dental implants are an excellent option for replacing missing teeth. However, sometimes implant-supported prostheses are damaged. This can be caused by trauma, complications from surgery, or other reasons.

What is an implant supported prosthesis?

An implant supported prosthesis is a fixed restoration that is anchored to dental implants. A tooth-supported bridge is the most common type of this type of prosthetic, but crowns and complete dentures can also be used. All of the teeth are supported and held in place by the implants rather than by natural teeth or gums alone. This makes them more stable and more comfortable for patients. The replacement teeth are custom-made to fit each patient’s unique smile in terms of shape and color so that they look as natural as possible. However, they do require special care and maintenance to keep them looking their best.

Implant supported prostheses are secured with abutments rather than solely relying on the bond between the restoration and the dental implant itself. Because the restorations are attached to the implants, they do not need support from the surrounding teeth and gums, making them last longer than traditional restorations. They are typically made from porcelain, metal or both and they are customized to work with the patient’s bite pattern. This ensures they function as well as they look.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small, metal posts that act as artificial tooth roots. They are inserted into the jawbone during a minor oral surgery procedure that takes place under local anesthesia. After the implants are placed, the area will need to heal for several months before the prosthetic can be attached. After the healing is complete and the patient is ready to move forward with treatment, a small connector post is placed on the implant. An impression is taken of the implant/connector combination and the artificial teeth are fabricated from that. Once the teeth are ready, an appointment is set up to attach the replacement teeth to the patient’s new smile. This fixture is not removable by the patient.

In most cases, patients who’ve received dental implants are able to enjoy their favorite foods again without feeling self-conscious about their teeth. Patients who have removable dentures or are missing all of their natural teeth experience significant improvement in quality of life after they are implanted with new teeth that look and act just like the real thing!

-Dr. Venn | Dentist in Asheville NC|Mountain Dentistry]]> Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

Dental implants are most often recommended for patients with missing teeth, but they may not be right for you. To determine if you are a candidate for implants, you will need to have an examination and consultation with your dentist.

Your dentist will perform a comprehensive exam to assess your oral health and determine if dental implants are the best option for you. Certain conditions may make you ineligible for dental implant procedures such as:

• Bone loss due to periodontal disease

• Gum disease

• Infection in gums or surrounding tissue

• Chronic health problems that compromise your immune system

• Weight issues (too heavy or too light)

• Smoking habits

• Alcohol abuse

If you are deemed eligible for dental implants, you may need to undergo additional procedures to first restore the health of your gums and bone structure before the implant can be placed. Usually, it takes about six months for the bone to heal and be strong enough to support the implant. During this time, your dentist may recommend any of the following treatments to help restore your smile and prepare it for the implant procedure. Note: Full mouth reconstruction does not qualify for financing with CareCredit. If you would like to finance your full mouth reconstruction treatment, please visit our office to discuss our available payment options.

What happens during dental implant surgery?

After your implants are placed, you’ll be sent home to heal for at least four to six months while the implant posts fuse with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration. During this time, you’ll wear temporary dentures and eat a soft diet until you’re ready to have your final teeth placed. Your dentist will give you a call when your prosthesis is ready to be delivered. They’ll also give you specific instructions on how to care for your new teeth at home.

How are dental implants retained?

Dental implants are secured to the jaw by being surgically placed into the jawbone. Like natural tooth roots, an implant post is integrated into your bone via the process of osseointegration. This not only provides a solid base for the implant to be attached to but also makes it so that the implant and the bone fuse together into one cohesive unit.

After implants have been placed they will go through a process known as soft tissue healing. This is when the surrounding gum tissues begin to heal around the your new implant. Healing can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to complete. During this time your bone will naturally grow around and secure the implant into place.

Once the area has healed your dentist will then attach the abutment that will hold the crown in place. The crown will be placed once the area is completely healed and your gums have completely adjusted to the new restoration.

It will take time for your jaw to fully heal from surgery. During the initial healing process you will likely be more sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. Your dentist may recommend that you avoid foods or liquids that can irritate your teeth such as chewing gum, ice, or hard candy. Additionally, they may also recommend a soft food diet during the initial healing period.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that provide a permanent base for fixed or removable replacement teeth. The implant itself is a small post made of titanium that is surgically placed into the jawbone beneath the gum line. After the implant has bonded to the jawbone, an artificial tooth is attached to the post. While implants are typically more expensive than other methods for replacing missing teeth, they provide superior benefits. In addition to looking and functioning like natural teeth, they are long lasting and promote bone health by preventing bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing. An implant supported overdenture is a type of denture that relies on two or more dental implants for support. This type of restoration is more stable, secure and comfortable than traditional dentures and allows patients to eat and speak more naturally without the fear of their prosthetic slipping out of place.
